The Many Names of God

God is eternal, meaning He has no beginning and no end!

In search of who God is, I have listed the many names of God to help me understand and revere Him for who He is. God uses many names throughout the Bible that explains His character and nature to us. As I journey through life and discover more,I will continue to add to this list. My hope is that you too will be blessed as you read God's names and praise Him for who He is.

The Many Names of God

Elohim - strong One, divine

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

El Elyon - Most High, the strongest One

Genesis 14:20 And blessed beGod Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.

El Roi - the strong One who sees

Genesis 16:13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

El Shaddai - Almighty God

Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty, walk before me and be blameless

Adonai - Lord, refering to a Master-to-servant relationship

Exodus 4:10, 13 11 Moses said to the Lord, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
13 But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.”

Yahweh - LORD “I Am,” meaning the eternal self-existent God

Exodus 3:13, 14 13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

El Olam - Everlasting God

Isaiah 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

God is incomparable; there is no one like Him.

Psalm 86:8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord;no deeds can compare with yours.
Isaiah 40:25 “To whom will you compare me?Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
Matthew 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

God is light

Isaiah 60:19 The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

He is everlasting, immortal and infinite, our refuge and protector

Deuteronomy 33:27 The eternal God is your refuge,and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, ‘Destroy him!’
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

God is unchanging, thus He is trustworthy

Malachi 3:6 “I the Lord do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

God is unfathomable, unsearchable, and there is no completely understanding Him with our finite minds

Isaiah 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
Psalm 145:3 Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.
Romans 11:33, 34 33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom andknowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?”

God is just; He does not show favoritism

Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

God is omnipotent and all-powerful.

Revelation 19:6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:“Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

God is omnipresent, meaning He is present everywhere.

Psalm 139:7-13
7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,”12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Jeremiah 23:23 “Am I only a God nearby, ”declares the Lord, “and not a God far away?

God is omniscient, meaning He knows everything that happened in the past, present, and future.

Psalm 139:1-5
1 O Lord, you have searched me and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. 5 You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.
Proverbs 5:21 For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths.

God is righteous

Exodus 9:27 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. “This time I have sinned,” he said to them. “The Lord is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong.
Matthew 27:45-46 45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi,lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

God is sovereign

Psalm 93:1 The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
Psalm 95:3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods.

God is spirit

John 1:18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.
John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

God cannot lie

1 Samuel 15:29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind. God is holy
Isaiah 6:3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
Habakkuk 1:13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

God is gracious

1 Peter 1:3 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
